SPOCK?

The kernel of the Quantico letter story is that, shortly after 9/11, an Egyptian-born former employee of Ft. Detrick's biodefense labs — an individual involved in a long-running grudge match with the Army over his dismissal from that facility — was named as a potential bioterrorist by an anonymous mailer, apparently a female officer at Ft. Detrick. Here at The Hatfill Project, we have no problem in seeing why Don Foster and Barbara Rosenberg got excited over this incident, and folded it into their theory that a right-wing rogue scientist was responsible for the anthrax killings. That would be an understandable leap of of logic, given that, publicly, the Bush administration was pushing the line that the anthrax letters were unconnected with 9/11 and appeared to be the work of domestic terrorists. Of course, we have since learned from Bob Woodward that, privately, the administration had concluded precisely the opposite, implying that the "domestic terrorism" guff was simply another cover story or delaying tactic, like the original "drank from a mountain stream" story used to blunt the impact of Bob Stevens' illness. A careful observer would also have noted the numerous a priori implausibilities involved in the "domestic terrorism" scenario, as well as certain rather strong indications emerging from South Florida that (a) there was a nexus between the hijackers and The Sun, the rather obscure tabloid publication targeted in the first anthrax "attack," and (b) that the government was covering that up.

Assaad, who would seem to be the obvious candidate for the rogue scientist award here, was exonerated by the FBI instantly. Everybody is taking that at face value, and we see no reason to doubt that estimate given the absence of any apparent follow-up by law enforcement. The same might be said regarding Assaad's tormentors, Zack and Rippy. Even the paleocons and MEChA types don't talk about Zack much these days — really, the whole anthrax story has been a disappointment to them, although Zack's name and the Zionist-neocon anthrax conspiracy has doubtless entered irrevocably into their respective political liturgies.

We feel compelled to remark that Dr. Assaad has benefited from an extraordinary amount of uncritical, almost simpering attention from practically all parties involved in keeping this story alive, including the Hartford Courant, Prof. Foster, Aztlan, and Antiwar.com. Perhaps that has more to do with his perceived value in facilitating politically-palatable theories of the anthrax case than the merits of his complaints. We do not know the man. For all we know he could be every bit as saintly as his acolytes make out. We feel, however, that the fact that he became the butt of his fellow PhDs' tasteless jokes at Ft. Detrick, then got laid off with the dead wood during a round of budget cuts, and has since carried on an interminable and unsuccesful legal crusade over the alleged racism and ageism involved in his dismissal, could simply be a sign that he is an incompetent malcontent and habitual troublemaker. That could explain the Quantico letter, too. It would be gratifying to see that possibility at least being considered objectively by his champions. We tend to think that won't happen, however.

Et tu, Hatfill?

The connection between Hatfill and the Quantico letter story has always been rather tenuous. Hatfill didn't join Ft. Detrick until after Assaad got the boot. It's certainly conceivable that he could have heard about Assaad through watercooler gossip, so one can't rule out the possibility that he then broke into Ft. Detrick's personnel files, and used that information as part of an elaborate ruse to distract attention from his own little plot to mail out weaponized anthrax after 9/11. But Foster claims he pinpointed the author of the Quantico letter for the FBI, using literary detection, and it turned out to be a female Ft. Detrick employee. Doesn't that let Hatfill off the hook? Or could Foster be referring to Hatfill's mysterious "secretary" girlfriend? Could she have been Hatfill's source for the personal info included in the Quantico letter, and could Hatfill have used her as a cat's paw to embroil the twice-martyred Assaad in his nefarious anthrax plot?

We at THP confess to a long-running curiosity about Hatfill's invisible girlfriend. She seems to be a most remarkable character. Few details have emerged about her since Hatfill tearfully beseeched assembled reporters to protect her privacy "for common decency." She's obviously quite stealthy, having evaded even the tabloids for a whole year, despite harboring the "person of interest" in the most sensational serial murder inquiry of recent times. Although she is reportedly a "secretary," she is evidently quite well-to-do. The "luxury condo" which she has put at Hatfill's disposal is decorated with $3,000 artwork, according to Hatfill. She seems to have experienced no difficulty in making up the $150K deficit in the couple's joint income for a whole year now. She's obviously tolerant and long-suffering, taking the electronic bugging of her luxury condo in her stride, even though it has made it impossible for the two lovebirds to have a private conversation at home for a whole year, according to the text of Connolly's complaint. She also hasn't apparently had any problem with a bored, housebound Hatfill remaking her condo over in a more masculine style, complete with Big Game trophies and a King Tut bar, according to the Washington City Paper. She did lose her cool on at least one occasion, however, screaming like Fay Wray when Hatfill's toe got run over by FBI "specialist" Bryan Blankenship's SUV. We know that because Pat Clawson described the scene vividly on Geraldo. She's obviously a very private person — the sort of person who would rather put up with electronic bugging and a 24x7 tail than go on television to help get her squeeze off the hook. Perhaps that is the Oriental Way. In another exciting tidbit, we've learned that she's Malaysian, reportedly leading the FBI to send emissaries to distant lands to check into her possible al-Qaeda connections. Her physical appearance is a mystery. Rumor has it that one sympathetic reporter has actually seen her, at a private dinner with Hatfill. She apparently remained silent all evening, so perhaps she is mute, and that explains her reticence.

So, is Hatfill's girlfriend the Quantico mailer? Foster isn't saying who he ID-ed at Ft. Detrick, and Marilyn Thomson's revelation that The Girlfriend works at a "financial consulting firm" seems to undercut any possible Army connection. But perhaps she has "moved on," like Ralph Kirby. Then again, Hatfill seems to have almost mystical powers of persuasion — evidenced by his ability to talk a "media savvy" PR flack and Oliver North assistant into serving as his "spokesman" for year, and get a CIA-insider lawyer to represent him in traffic court and file a suit against John Ashcroft — all for free. Perhaps Hatfill has puppets all over the place. It could be that this Ft. Detrick woman is just another pawn in Hatfill's game. We doubt it, but you never know.

Unsolved Mysteries

Is that it, then? We must admit that there are a couple of loose ends here that we have not addressed. According to Don Foster's new Vanity Fair piece, Dr. Assaad called him up at 10 PM on March 12, 2002 to recount a frightening phone call he had just received from someone claiming to be a Louisiana FBI agent. This was just after Hatfill's abortive move to Baton Rouge. The caller demanded to know if Assaad had been told who sent the Quantico letter, and rattled off a bunch of confidential information from Assaad's personnel file to prove his credentials. Very suspicious. Apparently, the FBI were dismissive when Assaad subsequently approached them about the call, just as Assaad's boss, Col. Franz, had been ten years earlier over the Camel Club incident.

The second mystery concerns FBI's refusal to release a copy of the Quantico letter, despite Assaad's persistant entreaties. According to Assaad, the FBI even gave him a bogus case number for filing an FOIA request to get hold of the letter. This June, the DOJ refused another request by Assaad, writing him that the letter's release "could reasonably be expected to disclose the identities of confidential sources and information by such sources."

All of which is very curious. We encourage the Courant and other interested parties to do their utmost to help Dr. Assaad get to the bottom of this matter. That said, we have a sneaking suspicion that, when all is said and done, it will emerge that the noble Assaad has led the whole lot of them on a wild goose chase.

# posted by Jef @ 7:45 AM
Thursday, September 18, 2003

<img src='http://www.ctnow.com/news/specials/hc-ant-1,0,6753520.story?coll=hc%252">

So what about the Quantico letter? What about the Camel Club? And what of the poor, noble, persecuted Dr. Assaad — and his tormentor, the sinister Jew, Lt. Col. Dr. Philip Zack, who was once caught sneeking into Ft. Detrick at an hour when all decent people are at home watching sitcoms or tucked up in bed? What of the Jew Zack's devoted henchwoman, Dr. Marion Rippy? Is she the unnamed "female officer" fingered by literary sleuth Don Foster in the latest Vanity Fair as the author of a fiendish attempt to frame the noble Assaad? And what has all this got to do with the anthrax letters and Steven Jay Hatfill?

We're nothing if not humble here at The Hatfill Project. If we don't know the answer to something, we're happy to admit it. Despite the progress we've made on the Hatfill matter, a whole army of scientists working at THP's heavily-fortified underground laboratories has yet to come up with a Unified Theory of Zack. We tend to think the Quantico letter is a giant red herring, and yet there are admittedly some peculiar aspects to the affair. We encourage our friends at the Hartford Courant, who have been dogged in their inquiries, to pursue this to the bitter end — even if we think it will most likely lead nowhere. In the mean time, we will offer up a few observations on what has transpired to date.

Dr. Ayaad Assaad is an Egyptian-born scientist who currently works at the EPA as a toxicologist. He was layed off from the Army's biodefense lab at Ft. Detrick, MD in 1997 during a round of budget cuts. After being fired, Assaad joined a lawsuit charging racial and age discrimination. The racial discrimination suit was dismissed. The age-discrimination complaint was ongoing at least as late as December 2001, judging from the Hartford Courant's reporting. Back in 1991, just after the Gulf War ended, Assaad was the butt of a lewd, 47-stanza poem written by some of his co-workers. The authors of the poem belonged to the soi-disante "Camel Club." They proposed each week to award an obscene rubber camel made in Assaad's "honor" to the co-worker "who did the least." Assaad claims his supervisor, Col. David Franz, was dismissive of his complaints over the harassment, establishing a pattern of racism on Franz's part which culminated in Assaad's sacking six years later.

On September 21, 2001, three days after the first round of anthrax letters were sent but well before any anthrax cases had become public, someone mailed an unsigned letter to the "Town of Quantico Police" identifying Assaad as a potential bioterrorist with a grudge against the United States. Assaad was interviewed by the FBI on October 2. The accusatory letter was read out loud to Assaad and his attornee during the FBI interview, but the government has persistently refused to release a copy to Assaad or the press, even to this day. The FBI have cleared Assaad of any suspicion in the anthrax mailings.

Some time after the anthrax story broke, the Hartford Courant got a tip from an FBI agent about the "Camel Club" affair. On December 19, 2001, the Courant ran a story about the letter fingering Assaad as a possible future terrorist. In the article, Assaad floats the theory that his anonymous accuser is the real anthrax killer, and the letter a transparent attempt to throw the feds off the trail.

Assaad's theory struck a chord with several observers of the developing anthrax case, including Don Foster, a Vassar professor and literary sleuth who had consulted for the FBI on several criminal investigations, Dr. Barbara Hatch Rosenberg, a biologist and prominent proponent of international controls over bioweapons proliferation, and Dr. Meryl Nass, author of a study implicating the white colonial regime in Rhodesia in the massive anthrax outbreak which occured in that country during the 1980s. Assaad's theory must have seemed attractive given that the FBI, CIA and White House spokesman Ari Fleischer were all on record promoting the notion that the anthrax attacks were unrelated to 9/11, but rather the work of "domestic terrorists" cashing in on the national tragedy. Further, the anthrax used in the letters had been publicly identified as a closely-held US military strain of the bacillus — a strain maintained at Ft. Detrick.

The Courant continued to investigate, reporting on a variety of apparently disturbing workplace incidents at Ft. Detrick. It emerged that Dr. Philip Zack, a Camel Club member who quit Ft. Detrick after the hazing incident, was caught by security cameras re-entering the facility at 9 o'clock one evening back in 1992. The person who let him in was his "friend," Dr. Marion Rippy, another member of the Camel Club cabal.

Foster, Rosenberg and Nass, who I dare say all lean to the NPR Left politically, have displayed no great interest in the Zack connection. They have preferred to keep the focus on Steven Hatfill, although Hatfill's own stint at Ft. Detrick didn't begin until after Assaad was fired. The same could be said of the FBI. However, Zack — allegedly an "Arab-hating Jew" — is prime suspect for the anthrax killings in the "paleo-con" circles represented by Liberty Forum and Antiwar.com. The putative Zionist agent has also been fingered by the Latino separatists at Aztlan — the folks who want California out of the US. Needless to say, the implication is that Zack is being protected by Bush's neo-con advisors. After all, 9/11 was really a Zionist plot to instigate US military action against the Arab states, and the anthrax letters merely the icing on the cake — the Riechstag Fire Part Deux, if you will. But you knew that already, right?

What are we to make of all this? Does Assaad's story really get us any closer to understanding the anthrax affair? We here at THP seriously doubt it. Analysis to follow...

# posted by Jef @ 7:58 AM

The Camel Club

"The Rhyme of the Ancient Camellier"

"Ayaad Assaad was the start,
with a reputation for not having heart
A 'skimmer' without equal
We hope there's no sequel
In his honor we created this beast
It represents life lower than yeast
Whoever is voted this sucker,
you can't duck her,
You must accept blame,
And bear all the shame
Unlike Assaad,
that first motherfucker"

***

Well it's time for the camel to pass
So let's all reach and raise up a glass.
Let's give'm the credit,
the one who will get it
the poor bastard we're gonna harass."

"the poor bastard we're gonna harass."

On the night of March 12, Ayaad Assaad received a call from a person representing himself as a Louisiana F.B.I. agent. The caller demanded to know if Assaad had been told who wrote the Quantico letter. To prove his credentials, the caller rattled off personal information from as far back as Assaad's Egyptian high school -- the Arabic name of which he pronounced correctly. Assaad believes he recognized the caller's source of information: he was likely reading from Assaad's confidential SF-171, a U.S.-government employment application form that had been on file at USAMRIID.

Frightened, Dr. Assaad hung up, then called me at home at 10 P.M. to tell me of the incident. I assured him the call was fraudulent. The F.B.I. does not conduct its business in that way.

There were, in my opinion, a few people whose recorded voices should be played back to Assaad to see if he recognized one of them as his anonymous caller. Though it is a felony to impersonate an F.B.I. agent, the task force decided not to investigate. According to Assaad, when he finally called the F.B.I., he was told to get caller ID.

Dr Ayaad Assaad - another victim of the anthrax mailer

Fort Detrick's anthrax mystery

Who tried to frame Dr. Ayaad Assaad, a former biowarfare researcher at the Army lab? Was it the same person responsible for last fall's anthrax mail terrorism?

By Laura Rozen

Jan. 26, 2002 | THURMONT, Md. -- On Oct. 2, Ayaad Assaad, a U.S. government scientist and former biowarfare researcher, received a call from an FBI agent asking him to come in for a talk. It was well before anthrax panic gripped the nation -- in fact, it was the same day that photo editor Robert Stevens, 63, was admitted to a Florida hospital. It wasn't until the next day that Stevens was diagnosed with inhalation anthrax, and another two days later, on Oct. 5, when he would become the first of five eventual fatalities caused by the apparent bioterrorist attack.

The day after hearing from the FBI, Assaad met with special agents J. Gregory Lelyegian and Mark Buie in the FBI's Washington field office, along with Assaad's attorney, Rosemary McDermott. They showed Assaad a detailed, unsigned, computer-typed letter with a startling accusation: that the 53-year-old Assaad, an Environmental Protection Agency scientist who filed an age discrimination suit against the U.S. Army for dismissing him from a biowarfare lab, might be a bioterrorist.

"Dr. Assaad is a potential biological terrorist," the letter stated, according to Assaad and McDermott. The letter was received by the FBI in Quantico, Va., but Assaad did not learn from the FBI where it had been mailed from. "I have worked with Dr. Assaad," the letter continued, "and I heard him say that he has a vendetta against the U.S. government and that if anything happens to him, he told his sons to carry on."

According to Assaad, "The letter-writer clearly knew my entire background, my training in both chemical and biological agents, my security clearance, what floor where I work now, that I have two sons, what train I take to work, and where I live.

"The letter warned the FBI to stop me," he said.

To be continued.....

THE QUANTICO LETTER

RETRO THREAD #6: ON THE QUANTICO LETTER

Red Herrings 'R' Us.

Posted on 8/3/04

So what about the Quantico letter?

Posted on 9/16/03

THE QUANTICO LETTER: ANALYSIS, MR.

That would be an understandable leap of logic, given that, publicly, the Bush administration was pushing the line that the anthrax letters were unconnected with 9/11 and appeared to be the work of domestic terrorists.

Posted on 9/19/03

FRAME UP ATTEMPT

CHAPTER 19--THE ANTHRAX LETTERS ANTI-ARAB

FRAME UP ATTEMPT

AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OF 9-11 AND THE WAR ON TERRORISM
by: Dr. Albert D. Pastore Phd.

On October 3, 2001, an Egyptian-American scientist named Dr. Ayaad Assaad sat terrified in a vault-like interrogation room at an FBI office in Washington D.C. It was not yet known that a pair of letters containing deadly anthrax had been mailed to NBC Newsman Tom Brokaw and US Senator Tom Daschle. Five people would die as a result of the anthrax mailings which had been mailed from New Jersey. Billions of pieces of mail were delayed, costing the US Post Office to suffer huge losses.
The news media ran nothing but anthrax stories night and day. Politicians and commentators speculated that Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein were behind the letters. Why was the FBI questioning Assaad?

Just before the anthrax murders were committed, someone had sent the FBI an anonymous letter accusing Dr. Assaad of being a bio-terrorist with a grudge against the United States. (1)The letter was sent on September 25th - before the first anthrax case was even diagnosed. The FBI agents soon were convinced that the anonymous letter was a hoax and a frame up attempt. Assaad was cleared of suspicion and released. Assaad later told The Hartford Courant of Connecticut:

'I was so angry when I read the letter, I broke out in tears. Whoever this person is knew in advance what was going to happen and created a suitable, well-fitted scapegoat for this action. You do not need to be a Nobel Laureate to put two and two together." (2) (emphasis added)

If we find out who would have wanted to frame Dr. Assaad in particular, and Arabs in general, we will likely find out who was behind the anthrax murders. That the wording of the anthrax letters was contrived in such a manner as to frame Arabs/Muslims is so self evident that even a mentally retarded child could see through it. Here is the wording of the Daschle letter:

"You cannot stop us. We have this anthrax. You die now. Are you afraid? Death to America. Death to Israel. Allah is great." (3). and the Brokaw letter:

"This is next. Take Penacilin now. Death to America. Death to Israel. Allah is great." (4)

Give me a break!!!!!!!!! Ask yourself. Who would want to frame Arabs? Who would want to link the interests of the US and the interests of Israel in the obvious way these ridiculous letters attempt to? Remember the Lavon Affair? Remember the USS Liberty? Remember the dancing Israelis? Remember Netanyahu saying 9-11 was good for US-Israeli relations?

A good place to start searching for the culprit is the US bio-weapons lab at Fort Detrick, MD. The Ames strain of anthrax has in fact been traced to Fort Detrick, where Assaad once worked until he was laid off in 1997. After he was let go from Fort Detrick, Assaad filed a federal discrimination suit based upon the brutal abuse and harassment that he had endured from some highly suspicious co-workers. In 1991, Assaad found an 8 page poem in his mailbox which became a courtroom exhibit. The poem had 235 lines, many of them lewd and sexually explicit, mocking Assaad. Along with the poem, the perpetrators left Assaad a rubber camel with a large penis attached to it. (5) This was an obvious attempt to mock Assaad's Arab ethnicity. Assaad said that when he brought the poem to the attention of his supervisor, Col. David Franz, Franz kicked him out of his office! (6) Now these weren't immature college kids doing this. This outrageous emotional abuse was carried out by highly trained scientists who obviously wanted to force Assaad out.

The scientist who was the ring-leader in these horrible attacks on Dr. Assaad was Dr. Lt. Col. Philip Zack. Philip Zack was to "voluntarily" leave Fort Detrick shortly after Assaad brought Zack's poem and camel to the attention of his supervisors. (7) Strike one on Dr. Zack!

In an unrelated matter, another Fort Detrick researcher, Dr. Mary Beth Downs told army investigators that on several occasions in January and February of 1992, she had come to work several times to discover that someone had been conducting anthrax research after hours. (8)

Who could that have been? Documents from that 1992 inquiry confirm that an unauthorized person was observed on a surveillance camera being let into the lab at 8:40 PM on January 23, 1992. Who was this unauthorized person caught sneaking into the bio-weapons lab, during the same time period that anthrax research was being done after hours? It turned out to be Lt. Col. Philip Zack! (9) The same Zack who was forced to resign a year earlier because of his horrible abuse of Dr. Assaad. Strike two on Dr. Zack!

Why would Dr. Zack and others have such an animosity towards Dr. Assaad? What would motivate him to help write a 235 line hate poem? What motive would he have to frame Arabs for the deadly anthrax murders? Well, some research into the name "Zack" reveals that it is a fairly common jewish surname, derived from the Old Testament "Zacharias". Dr. Zack is Jewish, and given his obvious, fanatical hatred of Arabs - we can safely deduce that he is a hard core Zionist. Strike three on Dr. Zack!

All of the above is public information. Assaad's 1990's legal proceedings, Dr. Down's testimony, the surveillance video of Zack sneaking into Fort Detrick one year after he had "resigned"- it's all there. The Hartford Courant exposed all of these facts (10) as did the Toronto Globe and Mail, (11) the Seattle Times, (12) and other publications. Just the facts contained in Hartford Courant story alone should be enough to at least indict Philip Zack. So why didn't we see Dr. Zack's face on our TV screens? Why hasn't Dr. Zack been given a lie detector test? What forces in the media and the government are protecting Zack from being exposed as the logical prime suspect?

The plot thickens (and sickens) even more. It is not my intent to smear, defame, or offend jewish people here. But to not mention the ethnicity of certain players in this fantastic drama would be like writing an expose on the Italian Mafia without mentioning that it's major players are Italians. Remember, some of the Zionistsf harshest critics are themselves jewish.

Dr. Assaad had been cleared and Dr. Zack was coming under a small amount of media and FBI suspicion. Enter, from stage left, one Barbara Rosenberg, a jewish environmentalist professor and political activist with no expertise in bio-warfare. (13) Rosenberg suddenly went public with the claim that she knew who the anthrax killer was. (14) She was supported in this effort by another Zionist New York Times journalist named Nicholas D. Kristof, who openly called for the arrest of the innocent American scientist named Dr. Stephen Hatfill. (15)

Quietly and behind the scenes, Rosenberg began directing investigators towards Dr. Hatfill (and therefore away from Dr. Zack). The Washington Post confirmed that it was Rosenberg who helped put authorities on the trail of the innocent Dr. Hatfill. (16)

The name of Hatfill trickled forth from the news media. In a matter of weeks, the trickle became a media flood. Dr. Hatfill became a household name. Hatfill called a news conference to protest his innocence. There was never even a shred of evidence against him and he even passed an FBI lie detector test. (17) But the Zionist controlled media lynch mob, led by the evil Rosenberg and the yellow journalist Kristoff, continued to pursue and harass Hatfill. Dr.Hatfill will never be imprisoned, but his life and career have been destroyed by these false allegations and the media hype. Lt. Col. Zack is off the hook.

What these mad Zionist scientists and their media brethren have done to Dr. Assaad and Dr. Hatfill is monstrous beyond belief. It is clear that these anthrax letters were first intended to be an anti-Arab frame up with Assaad meant to take the blame. When that didn't work, these fanatical Zionists (who always stick together like glue!) put the media and the FBI on poor Dr. Hatfill's back, and wrecked his career and reputation in the process. Why hasn't Dr. Zack been given an FBI lie detector test???? Ask FBI boss and ADL "partner" ; Robert Mueller!

THE ANTHRAX LETTERS: AN OBVIOUS ANTI-ARAB FRAME UP, it was only sent to Democrats and media enemies

Footnotes

1.
